Actually, it's not a mind flayer. It's Great Cthulhu. But it's commonly theorized that Cthulhu was the inspiration for Gygax and Arneson's illithid.

It's a detail from a painting of the Great Old One emerging from the sunken city or R'lyeh. Here's the full version:

The name of the ice cream is a reference to the old cultist chant "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn."
