Any of you play Warhammer 40,000? It's a futuristic table-top war game where you choose an army and buy the pieces, painting and gluing them together. I use Tau, I got a Battleon for Christmas but I still haven't painted them all

I've heard of it, and my school has a student club that plays it, but I've never played it myself.

The rules are actually very straight forward in practice. 40K is much simpler than, say, Battletech, although that game is hideously fun to play as well. The non-Macragge rulebook, though intimidating in size, is mostly fluff and illustration. And on top of that, many of the rules are only for special-case situations. For example, I have yet to play a game involving a barrage weapon or cavalry.

Just remember, when trying to find your to-hit numbers for ranged weapons, forget about the table and just use the following formula:

TN = 7 - BS

I think the best way for me to learn is to just play a game, so I'll try to get some more brushed ASAP and finish at least 1 fire team and 1 elite unit (aside from my stealth team, which is already finished) and call my friend over. Just to learn the basics of gameplay.

If you're playing Tau, then you have a few advantages when you're learning. You will probably never have to assault anyone, you don't have any indirect fire weapons save for a unique wargear piece from the new codex, and you don't have any goofy special rules for your faction like Inquisition's faith points or 'Nids synapse critters. As far as rules are concerned, Tau are one of the simplest factions. Of course, tactics are another matter entirely.

Just be sure you get a Devilfish so that you can perform the infamous Fish of Fury maneuver.

The battalion set gave me a vehicle, not sure which one, but you'll have to tell me what the maneuver is

I believe the vehicle in the Tau battleforce box is a Skyray, an unpopular fire support tank. (Certainly, they're not as good in 40K as they are in Dawn of War.) However, I think you can make a Devilfish from the same sprues as a Skyray. I don't know for sure, as I don't own any Skyray sprues, but I suspect that the Skyray box just contains a Devilfish sprue with a missile turret to make it a Skyray.

The Fish of Fury maneuver works like this:

1. Have a Devilfish loaded up with a full Fire Warrior team.
2. Move the 'Fish towards a target infantry squad, but make sure you end your movement with the right of left side of the transport facing the enemy. The leeward flank of the Fish should be about 10" away from the target. This is the tricky part, and you'll need to be a good judge of distance to make it work. Too far, and your Shas'la will be stuck on the front lines and unable to fire. To close, and the enemy will assault them and tear 'em to shreads in melee if you don't annihilate or break the enemy squad on your turn.

3. Disembark the Fire Warriors on the side of the 'Fish opposite of the enemy. If you positioned your Fish properly, the Fire Warriors should be within 12" of the target--rapid fire range. Remember that skimmers like the Devilfish do no block line of sight. Now deliver a barrage of 24 pulse rifle shots. (You could splash in some carbines as well. Less damage, but the pinning's nice.) Don't forget to fire your Fish's burst cannon and drones as well. There's always a chance, albeit slim, that the carbines on the drones will pin the enemy down.

When you opponent begins his turn, he will likely want to assault the Fire warrior team with what's left of his squad, since Shas'la are pathetic in melee. However, although the Fish doesn't block line of sight, it does block movement. Your Fish will essentially act as a wall to shield your Fire warriors from an assault. If your opponent tries to move around, make sure he remembers that he can't move a unit within 1" of an enemy during the movement phase--that is, the "wall" provided by the Fish goes 1" past the model in every direction.

For more fun, have two 'Fish perform the maneuver at the same time. This will provide a bigger wall for both squads. Not much can survive 48 Strength 5 shots.

In conclusion, FoF is a proven tactic that allows you to maximize the effectiveness of your Fire Warriors while shielding them from that nasty melee combat that all Tau dread.
